Love Letter to the Single Mother

July 6, 2017

Dear mommy who is parenting alone,

Parenting is tough.  But parenting alone brings its own set of challenges.  A few weekends ago, I attended a weekend conference for women who parent alone.  The conference was awesome.  The conference was something that I did not know that I needed…a weekend of refreshing.  I have been parenting alone for about six years now.  It is not something that I think about doing, I just do it.  Whatever needs to be done, I just do it.   I’m sure that many of you feel the same.  You just DO IT!! Each of our parenting journeys will look different.  So, I just want to take time to encourage each and every one of you.  I want to introduce to some of you and remind others, of God’s promises to us, as we continue on the journey of parenting alone.

1)   God loves you.

But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners,

Christ died for us.  Romans 5:8 (ESV)

It is in our human nature for us to want to “feel” and “be” loved.  As a woman who parents alone, it may be hard to feel loved at one time or another. But love is an action.  I am here to tell you that God loves you.  There is no greater love than the love of God.  If you immerse yourself in God’s love, you understand how wonderful it is to be loved.

As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.

Abide in my love.  John 15:9 (ESV)

2)   God is with you.

The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you;

he will never leave you nor forsake you.

Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV)

You are never alone.  God said that he will never leave you or forsake you.   Everyone experiences seasons of highs and lows.  But for a single mother, the “low” seasons can seem to be “lonely”.  Just know that because you parent alone, that does not make you lonely.   So, no matter what season that you are walking through, there is nothing to fear because God loves you and he is with you.

So do not fear, for I am with you;
    do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
    I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)

3)   God will provide.

And my God will meet all your needs according

to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:19 (NIV)

As the provider for the family, at one time or another, finances may appear to be low.  Notice that I said, “may appear be low”.  God will sustain you.   Although, there be times that you feel that you are struggling financially, know that Our father is a provider.  As I continue to parent alone, no matter what the situation is, was, or has been, God had always provided for us.   God can turn what we think is a little, into a lot.  Trust me, I have experienced him do it time and time again. During those times when unexpected expenses come up, don’t worry, God will take care of those too. Keep your eyes on God and not your financial circumstances.  God will ALWAYS supply ALL our needs.

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.

Psalm 23:1 (NIV)

4)   God will protect.

 The Lord is on my side; I will not fear.
    What can man do to me?

Psalm 118:6 (ESV)

There is nothing that we should fear. Since God promised to never forsake us, he protects us.  God’s protection is better than the protection that any person could ever provide.  While we are sleeping, God our protector is watching over us and our children.  Pray over yourself, your children, and your home, with the faith of knowing that God is our protector.

Indeed, he who watches over Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep

Psalm 121:4 (NIV)

5)   God will guide

Are there times when you feel like you do not know what the next step?  Are there times when you feel like you don’t know how to take the next step?  Of course, there are those time.  Pray to God for his guidance daily.  God will always provide guidance so that his will can be done.  The key is that we have to be open and accepting to HIS will and guidance.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
6) In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NJKV)

6)   God will comfort.

Parenting alone can be and is exhausting and overwhelming at times.  There are times when you are in emotional distress.  It is ok, to feel overwhelmed time to time.  Look to and talk  to God.  God can and will comfort you no matter the situation or the time of day.

As a mother comforts her child,
    so will I comfort you;
    and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.”

Isaiah 66:13 (NIV)

As a woman who parents alone, it is important that you take care of yourself. You can provid the best care for your children, when you are not at your best.  It is also important to build a asupprot system.  It may require that you seek out other people for a support.  Don’t be afraid to ask for help.  I am pretty sure that your support system will be willing and able to provide assistance.

And let us not grow weary of doing good,

for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9 (ESV)

DEAR MOMMY, IT WILL BE OK.  Take a deep breath and know that God has got your back.  God has a plan for both you and your children.  Always have faith and do not give up!  I am cheering FOR you and WITH you!!

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord,

“plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
