Come and Breathe
"And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. "Genesis 2:7 (NKJV)
Have you ever noticed that when life becomes overwhelming, one of the first things we stop doing is breathing? Not completely, of course.
But deeply.
We hold our breath when the bills keep piling up.
We hold our breath while waiting for the doctor's report, the job offer, or the answer to a prayer we have been praying for what feels like forever.
Without realizing it, we begin living in survival mode.
Our shoulders tighten. Our minds race. Our hearts become anxious.
And somewhere along the way, we forget to breathe.
After God began teaching me to rest, I noticed something else.
He was also teaching me to breathe.
Not just physically.
But spiritually.
In Genesis 2:7, the Bible tells us that God "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life." Before Adam ever accomplished anything, before he worked in the garden or fulfilled his purpose, he first received life from God.
That stopped me in my tracks.
Before there was doing...there was receiving.
I wonder how often we reverse that order.
We spend our days trying to earn, prove, fix, and accomplish, all while forgetting that every breath we take is a gift from the One who created us.
Maybe that is why we become so weary.
I have realized that breathing is an act of trust.
Every breath reminds us that God is sustaining us in ways we rarely stop to notice.
Every inhale whispers…"God is near."
Every exhale reminds us…"I don't have to carry this alone."
The truth is…I cannot control tomorrow.
I cannot force every door to open.
I cannot make every prayer unfold according to my timeline.
But I can remember this:
The same God who gives me each breath is faithful to sustain me through every season.
So today, before you rush into another meeting, another responsibility, or another worry...
Pause.
Take a slow, deep breath.
As you inhale, thank God for His presence.
As you exhale, release the fear you've been holding so tightly.
Then do it again…not as an exercise.
Do it as an act of worship.
Do it as a reminder that your life has always been held in God's hands.
Maybe today you do not need another answer.
Maybe you simply need another breath.
A breath filled with hope.
A breath filled with peace.
A breath that reminds you that the Shepherd who restores your soul is closer than you think.
So today, I want to leave you with the same invitation God has been extending to me.
Come and breathe.
Receive His peace.
Receive His grace.
Receive the life that only He can give.
Because the God who breathed life into creation is still breathing hope into weary hearts today.
"The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life. "Job 33:4 (NKJV)
Reflection
What has been taking your breath away lately? What would it look like to intentionally pause throughout your day and remember that every breath is a gift from God?
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being the Giver of life. Thank You for every breath I take and for sustaining me even when I feel weak and overwhelmed. Forgive me for trying to carry burdens You never intended for me to bear.
Teach me to slow down and receive what You give freely….Your peace, Your grace, and Your presence. When fear takes my breath away, remind me that You are near. Help me to breathe deeply, trust fully, and walk confidently, knowing my life is safely in Your hands.
Thank You for reminding me that the breath of the Almighty still gives me life. May every breath I take be a reminder of Your faithfulness, Your presence, and Your unfailing love.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
My dear sister, take the time to BREATHE.
His LOVE and MINE,
Shemeca
