Love Series (Week 2): Loving God!

Shemeca

What does it mean to Love God?

So yes, we say that we love God. But if we remember from week one…love is ACTION.

The HOLY BIBLE tells us to love God.

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

Deuteronomy 6:5 (ESV)

Be very careful, therefore, to love the Lord your God.

Joshua 23:11 (ESV)

And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”

Luke 10:27 (ESV)

We love God because he loved us first. His love is the true example of love.

We love because he first loved us.

1 John 4:19 (ESV)

Since LOVE is ACTION, here are some ways that we show our love to God.

1) We fear him.

Not the “scary fear”, but fear out of reference/respect to who God is. I can remember growing up in Louisiana, the elderly and Pastors used to talk about “fearing God”, as if he is just sitting there in heaven waiting for us to mess up and counting our mistakes. I can remember them saying things like, “God is gonna get ya for that”, or “He sits high and looks low”. That is not the type of God we serve. Last week we talked about God is love. So we fear him because of who HE IS. God delights in us when we fear him. We are blessed when we fear God. We live a long and satisfying life when we fear God.

And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

Deuteronomy 10:12 (ESV)

Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in his commands.

Psalm 112:1 (NIV)

The fear of the Lord leads to life, and whoever has it rests satisfied; he will not be visited by harm.

Proverbs 19:23 (ESV)

But the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.

Psalm 147:11 (ESV)

For as high as the heavens are above the earth,so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him.

Psalm 103:11 (ESV)

2) We keep His Commandments.

We show our love to God by keeping his commandments. We keep his commandment by living them out each day. It is a commandment for us to love God.

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38) This is the first and greatest commandment.

Matthew 22:37-38(NIV)

For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.

1 John 5:3 (ESV)

Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”

John 14:21 (ESV)

“And if you will indeed obey my commandments that I command you today, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul, 14) he will give the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the later rain, that you may gather in your grain and your wine and your oil.

Deuteronomy 11:13-14 (ESV)

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations

Deuteronomy 7:9 (ESV)

3) We read His Word (Holy Bible).

In order for us to keep God’s commandments, we must know his commandments. We learn his commandments by reading his Word. We get to know God by reading his Word. We build an intimate relationship with God, by reading his Word. We need to have a relationship with the God whom we love.

**This is the new year. If you have not been reading the Holy Bible, start now. You can read the word by doing a topical bible study/devotion, or by reading through the Holy Bible one book at a time. During this “quiet time”, pray for and listen for what God is revealing to you through his scriptures. It is amazing how I can read through a book of the Bible for a second or third time and get a different perspective each time.***

Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24) Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.

John 14:23-24 (ESV)

But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

Luke 11:28 (ESV)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:1 (ESV)

I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

Psalm 119:11 (NLT)

4) We pray consistently.

Prayer helps us to build and nurture that intimate relationship with God. Prayer is how we communicate with God. But it is during our prayer time that God communicates with us, but we must be still and listen.

**So each time you pray, don’t just give God a list of your needs, wants, and desires, pause and listen for his guidance and direction for his will in your life.**

And because we love God, we want HIS WILL in our LIFE, not OUR WILL.

Rejoice always, 17) pray without ceasing, 18) give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (ESV)

5) We love others.

Yes, we show love to God by loving others. We learned that God is love.

If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.

1 Corinthians 13:3 (NLT)

And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.

1 John 4:21 (ESV)

Conclusion:

Loving God has his benefits. God delights in us when we love him. No matter what we go through, because we love God, he will work everything out for our good.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28 (NIV)

Other scriptures on Loving God.

You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.

Jeremiah 29:13 (ESV)

Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually!

1 Chronicles 16:11 (ESV)

I love you, O Lord, my strength.

Psalm 18:1

So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

1 John 4:16 (ESV)
